Quality Meat Scotland (QMS) is hosting an industry-wide conference next month to look at ways the supply chain can work together to develop, promote and protect the Scottish red meat industry.

The red meat levy body is urging farmers and anyone involved in the red meat supply chain to register to attend its Meat the Future event, which takes place on February 25 at the Radisson Blue Hotel in Glasgow.

Speakers will include: Rural Economy Secretary Fergus Ewing; Scotland Food and Drink chief executive James Withers; and past Scotch Beef Farm of the Year winner Robert Fleming of Castle Sinniness Farm in Dumfries.

Dr Frederic Leroy, who is professor of food science at Vrije Universiteit, Brussels, will discuss how to combat myths around red meat, while Meat Standards Australia chairman Dr Rod Polkinghorn will outline how the red meat industry can create unique selling points for Scotch Beef.

“Our industry is currently facing an unprecedented amount of challenges,” said QMS chief executive Alan Clarke.

“However, there are also many opportunities on the horizon and it’s vital that we work together as a supply chain to seize and maximise these.

“We’ve worked hard to bring together world-renowned speakers from across the world to talk about some of the challenges we face and how we can counter these, but to also inspire delegates and get them thinking about the future potential of our industry and the positive steps their businesses can take to ensure a profitable and future-proofed sector going forward.”

Spaces for the conference, which is free to attend, are limited and must be booked in advance by visiting qmscotland.co.uk or calling 0131 510 7920.
