Peterhead Power Station began producing electricity in 1980.
Originally built as a coal-fired station it was converted to burn North Sea gas.
Twenty years later, its owner Scottish and Southern Energy (SSE) completed a £220million investment at the plant that converted it into one of the world’s most environmentally advanced power stations.
Prince Charles praised its green credentials after touring the site and chatting with staff during the official opening in October, 2000.
SSE joined forces with oil and gas firm Shell to turn the plant into a world-first carbon capture and storage demonstrator project.
The scheme was the frontrunner in a UK government competition which would award £1billion to finance the project.
But the project was scrapped in 2015 when the UK government unceremoniously dropped the plan in its autumn budget.
