Whiteford reminds fishermen how Tories previously “sold out” the industry

The SNP’s Banff and Buchan candidate Eilidh Whiteford last night hit back at her Conservative opponents.

Ms Whiteford, who is defending a 14,300 vote majority in a seat which has been held by the SNP since 1987, warned fishermen that the Tories previously “sold out” the industry.

“Everyone wants to get a good deal for the fishing industry and, unlike the Tories, I have been consistent in my criticism of the CFP.

“But the Tories have admitted that they are simply going to incorporate the CFP into UK law, and are planning to use the industry as a bargaining chip in negotiations with the Spanish and others.

The SNP have also countered their opponents claim that a Conservative MP will better represent the industry during the Brexit negotiations. Alex Salmond has dismissed the idea a Tory backbencher would play a role in a trade deal.

Ms Whiteford said the Conservatives have only made “vague promises” to date and could use the fishing sector as a bargaining chip in a bid to get a better deal for the whole UK economy.

She added: “The Tories sold us out on the way into the CFP, and they will sell us out again as we leave.”
