An Aberdeen hairdresser is giving a young person the chance to make the cut after signing up to the Press and Journal’s Apprentice 100 campaign.
The team at Donna Frost Hair, formerly Partners in Hair, is currently training one budding stylist, with external assessment provided by Falkirk-based Athena Learning.
And the business will now take on one more as part of our quest to create scores of great careers for youngsters in the north and north-east of Scotland.
It is the third salon to have supported our initiative after James Dun’s House and Saks – and a fourth will be announced before the end of our campaign.
Owner and manager Donna Frost, who has been a hairdresser for three decades and is a qualified trainer, said the role will open up a wide range of opportunities for the successful applicant.
She said: “This profession can give you a chance to own your own business, work on cruise ships, become a trainer. It’s a great job and a real career.”
Ms Frost also said apprentices are vital for the industry and that she hopes the current dearth of talent is just a blip.
She said: “I could not run this salon without apprentices coming in. They’re the up and coming hairdressers of the future.
“It’s been difficult to attract young people recently. There has been a dip but hopefully it will come back.”
Apprentice Rebecca Monk has been soaking up the tips and training she has received at Donna Frost Hair over the last two years.
Miss Monk, 18, said: “It’s been really good. Even though only one person is assigned to train you specifically, everyone is really good with suggestions.
“Everyone’s got their own techniques and they are happy to share them with you, so you learn there is more than one way of doing things.”
Her goal is to go full-time, build up her client base and, ultimately, become self-employed.
