An engineering firm with a new £2.5million facility in Aberdeen has backed the Press and Journal’s quest to help young people get onto the career ladder.
MB Air Systems, which supplies various sectors with air compressors and industrial lifting equipment, will add an apprentice to its Aberdeen-based team of 22 in the coming months as part of our Apprentice 100 campaign.
It means we have created 115 new jobs since Apprentice 100 launched on September 4 – and we are still look for more pledges with less than three weeks of the initiative to go.
The company’s new 13,500sq ft facility in Dyce, which was unveiled in July, houses offices, a workshop and a training academy alongside a 150tonne undercover test tower.
MB’s instructors use the test tower to teach apprentices how to safely operate lifting equipment.
And the training facility is also open to employees who work for MB’s north-east clients, most of which are from the oil and gas sector.
MB, which already has two mechanical technician apprentices on its payroll, expects demand for its training services to keep growing as word spreads.
MB director Steve Harkin said training is part and parcel of daily life at the company and that he is delighted to be counted as a supporter of Apprentice 100.
Mr Harkin said: “We take great pride in our apprenticeship programme at MB Air Systems, in Aberdeen as well as at our facilities in Lanarkshire, Hampshire and Tyne and Wear.
“There is a tremendous amount of experience in our business and by offering apprenticeships we are able to share that with the next generation, ensuring continuity and maintaining the high standards we set.
“With two apprentices learning their trade at present, as well as seven on the staff who have served their time, we know how well the system works.
“That is why we’re delighted to be part of the Apprentice 100 programme and happy to pledge our support.”
