Aberdeen mattress maker Glencraft will be keeping it busy after winning a contract to make 190 beds units a week for a Glasgow construction firm.

Social enterprise, Glencraft, which employs blind and partially-sighted workers, will deliver the spring units to City Building Glasgow for two years.

The firm is a joint venture between Glasgow City Council and the Wheatley Group, which owns Glasgow Housing Association (GHA) – one of Europe’s biggest social land lords. City Building undertakes around £33million a year in repairs for GHA.

Glencraft currently has about 45 members of staff, around 80% of whom are disabled or come from a disadvantaged background.

Graham McWilliam, Glencraft’ managing director, said: “Winning this contract is a great boon for Glencraft. We handcraft our mattresses and spring units to ensure they are of the highest quality made by our loyal and dedicated team. This two year contract will provide the business with stability and allow us to hopefully win further work with other organisations looking to collaborate with social enterprises.”

Lesley Quinn, head of client management and communications for City Building, said: “Their spring units will be used by our manufacturing division at City Building, Royal Strathclyde Blindcraft Industries (RSBi). Where possible we look to work with social enterprises and supported businesses, as part of our high standards for responsible business practice and Glencraft are a quality business making a quality product.”
