Firms from the north and north-east have been taking part in pitches in the hope of having their products stocked on the shelves of Morrisons supermarkets.

After announcing a search for more local suppliers earlier this year, the chain selected 50 companies out of more than 140 applicants to take part in events in Perth and Musselburgh this week.

Among businesses chonen were Thains Bakery of Aberdeen, seafood supplier Downies of Whitehills and Kallin Shellfish, from the Outer Hebrides.

Angus Bell, Morrisons local category manager for Scotland said: “Scotland has a long history of great, local food and the producers we’ve seen have been no exception.

“After seeing the quality of the food here in Scotland this week, we’re keen to put even more food made in the country on our customers’ plates.”

Other firms from the north and north-east invited to pitch were the Really Garlicky Company, Angus and Oink Ltd, James Rizza and Sons, Mackintosh of Glendaveny, Murdoch Alland and Sons, Rora Dairy, Fierce Beer and Castletown Farm Shop.

Morrisons said the suppliers it thinks have what it takes to supply its stores will invited to a final round at the supermarket’s head office in Bradford.

The company added it introduced 150 new Scottish lines last year.  Aviemore-based Cairngorm Brewery’s products were among 30 new beers stocked.
