Two Aberdeen-based energy service firms have announced contracts totalling more than £22 million, as well as key new appointments amid growing confidence in the oil and gas industry.

Drilling and oilfield equipment specialist MRDS said yesterday it had secured £4 million-worth of new work after beefing up its senior management team. The firm, which provides repair and maintenance services to offshore contractors, is also “actively recruiting” for a further 10 people across a range of roles.

MRDS, which currently employs 35 people, said it was seeing more demand for its services as the industry continues its recovery.

The latest projects – all secured within the past three months – include inspection, repair and maintenance work for several North Sea installations, to be carried out at the firm’s Altens base as well as by field service technicians on the platforms.

MRDS has also netted its first project in the Middle East, where it will provide service and maintenance for drilling and well control equipment and jacking systems for a rig reactivation in Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates.

The company expects accounts for the year to the end of August 2018 to show record turnover of £8m, while it is forecasting growth to £15m by the end of next year.

Ian McGillivray joined the firm as sales director this year, having previously worked for energy services company Allrig.

With 13 years’ experience in the oil and gas industry under his belt, he was taken on to drive continued growth in the north-east and internationally, and to help managing director Mark Robertson achieve long-term goals.

Mr McGillivray said: “Our principal targets are to continue to deliver a high quality and reliable service to our North Sea clients, as well as expand our service to existing and new clients in international locations.”

MRDS, which stands for Mark Robertson Drilling Services, was founded in early 2015. It specialises in the project management, inspection, repair and overhaul of drilling equipment.

The family-owned company has a strong international presence and operates in the Americas, west and north Africa and now the UAE.

Meanwhile, well management and performance improvement firm Exceed Energy has reeled in contracts worth a total of more than £18m.

Its new work has not only prompted a key appointment, with Iain Scott joining from Schlumberger as business development manager, but also a move to new premises on Rubislaw Terrace. Exceed, whose 60-strong Aberdeen workforce provides support for more than 140 project workers globally, is to deliver full well management services offshore Gambia for a southern hemisphere-based exploration company and a drilling campaign offshore Ghana for a Norwegian operator.

Fiona van der Vossen, legal counsel, Exceed, said the company’s relocation from Bon Accord Square would “provide an optimum working environment for our growing team”.

Exceed is controlled by Ian and Sonia Mills, whose business generated revenue of nearly £2.5m during the 12 months to February 28 2017.
