Whisky workers have made more than 55,000 bottles of hand sanitiser after repurposing distilleries as part of the coronavirus effort.

Distribution of the free bottles will begin this week in communities where Diageo has distilleries and operations.

The famous whisky distilling communities of Islay and Speyside will be among those which benefit.

Diageo has a number of distilleries across the region including in Muir of Ord, Alness, Elgin and Keith.

The company is working in partnership with local authorities and community organisations to deliver hand sanitiser where it is most needed, targeting care homes, care staff and people volunteering to help the vulnerable.

Ewan Andrew, the firm’s president of global supply and procurement, said: “This initiative has very much been driven by our people at our sites the length and breadth of Scotland who want to contribute locally in their communities.

“I am extremely proud of every employee and our suppliers who have contributed to this project, from the scientific and regulatory teams who developed the process through all the colleagues working to make and distribute it to the community.”

It was in mid-March that appeals went out for distilleries to adapt and produce sanitiser, as the threat of the pandemic grew across the UK.

At the end of that month, Diageo pledged to pledged two million litres of alcohol to manufacturing partners, to help protect frontline healthcare workers.
