An “ambitious” programme of events is being planned to bring Oban to life next year.

Brighter fireworks and more Christmas lights are already on the agenda.

And Graeme Bass, the new chairman of Oban’s Business Improvement District (Bid) company, said the improvements were setting the tone for a bigger and better 2015 in the town.

Graeme Bass, chairman of Bid4Oban, was speaking as he revealed the group has helped to relocate Oban’s fireworks display from Mossfield to the town centre.

The display on Wednesday night will be best viewed from George Street between the North and Railway Piers, with the fireworks being set off from

the Northern Lighthouse Board pier.

The event begins at 7.15pm for 7.30pm and shops will stay open until 7pm to take advantage of the increased number of people expected in the town.

Bid4Oban has helped Oban Fireworks Committee to make the display bigger and better by donating £3,000.

On the future, Mr Bass said: “We have a very ambitious programme of events for 2015. I can’t give much away at present, but suffice to say it is a pretty exciting calendar of events.”

Mr Bass, senior account executive Clark Thomson Insurance Brokers, has taken over the chairmanship of the Bid group from John Forteith, of Forteith Food Services.

He is supported by new vice chairman David McGregor of Simmers and Co chartered accountants.

The Bid has already increased the Christmas lights in the town, with new displays at the Black Linn Burn and Rockfield tree. It has also been responsible for hanging baskets and floral displays throughout the town centre.

This year they will be extending the Christmas lights to the area surrounding the Corran Halls and Dunollie Road.

It is offering a new grant of up to £1,000 to spend on shop fronts for existing levy payers who are expanding or relocating elsewhere in the town.

Mr Bass said: “It is a tremendous honour to be granted the opportunity to take forward the work so ably carried out by John and Alister. There have been many significant achievements by the Bid company in its first two years in terms of improving the physical environment of our open spaces, supporting businesses through providing assistance to improve shop fronts and encouraging local spend through the Love Oban voucher scheme.”
