Kier signed up for work at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary

Kier Construction appointed by NHS Grampian as a construction partner

Kier Construction said yesterday it hoped to start construction work at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary (ARI), in the next stage of a backlog maintenance programme, about a year from now.

The company – part of Kier Group – was appointed by NHS Grampian as a construction partner to redevelop accommodation above the main entrance to ARI and convert it into a dedicated outpatient care facility.

Kier Construction said it would initially work with technical staff in the health service to “present a deliverable and affordable work programme” for consideration by the NHS Grampian board, before managing and delivering the build programme.

The contract’s value was undisclosed but it is part of a £150million transformation of NHS Grampian’s Foresterhill site announced in August.

It follows a string of recent healthcare project wins for Kier Construction. These include its appointment by hub East Central Scotland to undertake work on a new medical centre in Doune, near Stirling.

Sean O’Callaghan, area operations director for Kier Construction, said: “This deal illustrates our capabilities across significant healthcare projects throughout Scotland and further cements our position as a leading player in the north-east of Scotland.

“This is a significant investment by NHS Grampian, which has recognised our skills and expertise.

“Not only will this development help support healthcare within Aberdeen city, it will also lead to job creation and learning opportunities, helping to support both the local and Scottish economies.

“It is a project we are pleased to be working on as we maintain the positive momentum shown during 2015.”

NHS Grampian modernisation director Graeme Smith said: “This project is one of many significant pieces of work set to be undertaken during the course of the next five years.

“NHS Grampian is set to invest more that £150million to keep moving forward and we have worked with patients, staff and the general public to make sure that work undertaken supports the people of Aberdeen for generations to come.”

Kier Construction is one of five principal supply chain partners involved in a £600million NHS investment in building, refurbishing and maintaining hospitals and doctors’ surgeries around Scotland.
