Benromach distillery in trip through time to produce high-end whisky

A distillery in Moray has delved deep into its past to produce a 35-year-old whisky which will retail for more than £400.

The rare whisky was made at Benromach before the Forres-based distillery closed in 1983.

Established in 1898, the distillery lay shut for a decade before the takeover from Gordon and MacPhail (G&M).

After the takeover, G&M spent five years modernising the distillery before it was officially reopened by Prince Charles.

Benromach 35 Years OId was created during Donald MacDonald’s time as distillery manager – which ended in 1983 − and was matured in casks that were left behind in the warehouses.

Benromach  Distillery Company describes it as a satisfying Speysider with cinnamon hints and beeswax polish, stewed pear and a delicate charred Oak edge.

Current distillery manager Keith Cruickshank said: “Benromach 35 Years Old is a very special whisky for everyone at the distillery, as very few casks of Benromach remain from this time period.

“Benromach today is created respecting the traditional working practices of yesteryear and is lovingly handcrafted by sight, by sound, and by touch, using the finest natural ingredients.

“The 35 Years Old is the perfect dram to toast the past, present and future of Benromach.”

It can be bought at specialist whisky retailers for £425.
