Deeside Timberframe on track to smash turnover record

A Stonehaven-based timber frame maker is on track to smash last year’s record-breaking revenue figure thanks to its expansion into the central belt and England.

Deeside Timberframe, a subsidiary of Banchory-based builder Bancon Group, also said its order book for the north-east was still “healthy” despite the difficult economic conditions in the region.

The company, which designs, makes and installs timber frames for construction companies, posted sales of £23million in the 16 months to March 31, 2016.

That accounting period was extended when the firm switched its year end from November 30 to the end of March to bring it in line with the rest of Bancon’s subsidiaries.

During the current accounting period, which is only three months old, Deeside Timberframe has already done more than £16million worth of trade thanks to growth outside its traditional stomping ground.

Founded in 1985, Deeside Timberframe opened a production facility near Stirling in 2006 to pave the way for its expansion south.

The investment is paying off. More than 60% of the firm’s business now comes from outside the north-east.

Deeside Timberframe said the contracts secured so far this year were for affordable and private housing, schools, care homes and hotels.

In the north-east of Scotland, the company has been providing frames to Cala Homes and Scotia for housing developments and to Morrison Construction for an Aberdeen care home.

Outside the north-east, Deeside Timberframe has won contracts for social housing projects in Glasgow, East Calder and Runcorn, and a care home development in Greenock.

Other recent projects the business has been involved in include the new Perth Racecourse Hotel.

The firm’s managing director, John Wright, said: “We are expecting to see another strong year of sales for our innovative timber frame solutions in both the house builder and construction sectors.

“Despite tough market conditions here in the North-east, trading in the region remains strong with a healthy order book and an extremely high level of enquiries.”

About 25 people are currently employed by the company at the base near Stirling, with 45 at its headquarters in Stonehaven.
