For quite a few years now, runners of all shapes, sizes and ages have taken part in parkrun events in Inverness.

But now, younger fitness enthusiasts in the city have been given their very own Inverness junior parkrun – all 2km of it.

Last year, the city’s parkrun moved to a dedicated new course at Torvean, and hundreds of people turn up every Saturday for the free event.

And now four- to 14-year-olds have a share in the action, with a 2km course plotted out for them every Sunday at 9.30am.

This weekend, dozens of youngsters took part in the inaugural Inverness junior parkrun.

How did it go?

After a warm-up – complete with star jumps – for all the competitors and spectators, dozens of kids hit the start line.

Run director Fiona Gordon got them off to a good start for the first Inverness junior parkrun.

An impressive total of 54 young runners, aged between four and 14, crossed the finishing line.

School friends Georgia and Elspeth, both seven and from Inverness, said they enjoyed it.

Elspeth, whose has done adult parkrun a few times, said she’d be back – and might even do the double one weekend.

Lily, Kiorstaidh and Oliver, also all seven, added: “We enjoyed it. We’ll all come back – maybe.”

What’s it all about?

Event directors Nicola Madej and Gillian Brandon wanted to thank Highland Council, Inverness Common Good Fund and Ward Discretionary Fund for help with start-up costs.

They said: “We’re delighted to e using the new Torvean park for our weekly free event for four- to 14-year-olds.

“The event is run entirely by volunteers led by a small group of run directors. We would welcome more volunteers.”

The event – officially known as Torvean Junior Parkrun – will take place every Sunday from now on.

At 2km instead of 5km, it is a more manageable distance for kids than its adult equivalent.
