Winning artists will turn ideas into real works of art

Four artists have won the chance to have their ideas turned into real works of art to be showcased during an innovative festival in Aberdeen, thanks to a new funding initiative.

Craig Barrowman, Fiona McCubbin, Janet McEwan and Allan Watson will receive a share of £3,000 to fund projects which will form a key part of the 2017 Look Again festival.

The funding comes from the Look Again Seed Fund – supported by Aberdeen City Council – which was open to artists and designers with north-east links at any stage of their creative careers.

Festival director Sally Reaper, said: “The successful applicants specialise in very different disciplines within visual art and design so it’ll be fascinating to watch how their chosen projects take shape.

“We are very keen to encourage homegrown talent back to the city and are delighted to see talented individuals, who were either born here or studied here, returning to showcase new work.

“Look Again not only strives to be a leading festival on the Scottish art and design scene but also wants to support established and new artists to produce new work so that many more great ideas can become visible.”

The festival, spearheaded by Robert Gordon University and Aberdeen-based art agency Smart, has become a firm favourite on Aberdeen’s cultural calendar, attracting world-leading artists such as last year’s headline act Turner Prize winners, Assemble.

A mirrored pavilion, designed by RGU architecture student Lucy Fisher and a group of final year students, and installed at the Castlegate proved one of the festival’s most popular attractions last year.

Now in its third year, Look Again will take place from April 27 to May 1, although the lineup is yet to be revealed.
