A musical celebrating Robert Burns will be held in the historic surroundings of one of his visits to the north of Scotland.

The Bard visited the Highlands and Moray in 1787 on a tour of the area to build support for his work.

Now Robert Burns The Musical is due to be held at Brodie Castle this week as part of the attractions celebrations to mark Burns’ Night.

The production, written by Lossiemouth-based Tish Tindall, imagines the life of the poet if he was alive in the 21st Century.

Lossiemouth High School pupil Elijah Aspinall has been cast in the lead role alongside Taylor Stuart, from Elgin, who will play Burns’ long-suffering wife Jean Armour.

The performances will be staged in the elaborate drawing room in the castle with the songs played on a 19th Century grand piano.

Ms Tindall said: “It’s been quite emotional during rehearsals to know that we are in the castle where Burns himself stayed.

“It’s an exquisite and unique setting too. The opportunities to perform in a such an intimate venue like this don’t come along very often.

“We’ve tried to imagine what his life would be like today. What being at school would have been like and how he would have gone about getting published.”

The musical is based on a show called “Red Red Rose”, which was written by David Gest before it was adapted by Ms Tindall.

Performances of the musical will take place at Brodie Castle on Thursday and Friday at 7.30pm. Tickets can be booked online at www.nts.cloudvenue.co.uk/thebrodieburnsexperience
