Winter grazing workshops planned for sheep farmers

The amnesty runs for three years

Winter grazing strategies for ewes will be showcased at a series of free farmer events next month.

The events, which are funded by Quality Meat Scotland (QMS) and run by SAC Consulting, set out to give farmers and crofters cost-effective, practical solutions to provide forage to ewes over the winter period once grass growth slows down.

QMS knowledge transfer specialist, Michael Blanche, said: “Sheep farmers often face the challenge of having too many sheep in the winter for the grazing available. It can be a significant cost to support these ewes nutritionally by other means.

“This series of workshops will look at the low cost techniques some farmers are successfully using to overcome this challenge. These include producing forage crops, rotational grazing and targeted nutrition.”

The events planned for the north and north-east take place during the second week of February.

First up on Tuesday February 14 is an event at Fearn Farm, Tain, by kind permission of John Scott.

The second event takes place on Wednesday February 15 at Brogan Farms, Ellon, by kind permission of Dane Davidson.

Both events run from 10.30am to 3pm. They are free to attend but advanced booking is required by contacting SAC Consulting’s Turriff office on 01888 563333.
