Pig farmers are invited to a series of industry meetings in Aberdeenshire later this month.
The first meeting, which is being organised by researchers from SRUC, will give producers the chance to shape the direction of future industry research.
It forms part of the rural college’s drive to promote its research programme and discuss industry requirements.
Ross Mackenzie from the Portree office of SAC Consulting – the SRUC consulting arm – said: “This is a two-way process. Pig farmers are being invited to hear all about the current research which is being undertaken. But we also want to engage with them to hear what research is needed in the future to help take the Scottish pig industry forward.”
Farmers will hear from veterinary epidemiologist Dr Carla Gomes and SRUC researcher Dr Emma Baxter.
Dr Baxter said: “The roadshow will introduce our latest research tackling a variety of different issues relating to pig health, welfare and management. There will be a particular focus on pig aggression and a chance for farmers to feedback their opinions and experiences.”
Immediately after the research meeting, producers will be invited to attend the latest pig monitor farm meeting at the same venue.
The pig monitor farm, which is being delivered by SAC Consulting, is a three-year project being run by Quality Meat Scotland and north-east economic development agency ONE. The host farm a 530-sow unit at Mill of Carden, near Inverurie, which is run by Patrick Stephen.
The meetings take place at the Lochter Activity Centre, near Oldmeldrum, on Tuesday February 21. They start at 1pm and include a free lunch.
