The Forgandenny Horse Trials kicked off the Scottish eventing season.

The event, which took place at Baxterknowe Farm, Forgandenny, near Perth, saw 461 entries compete over the two days with Aberdeenshire riders enjoying a friendly and well-run event.

Stuartfield-based Claire Smith on her own Furioso De Foja won the BE100 section D.

The attractive seven-year-old grey gelding led after the dressage against a class of 21.

Adding only 0.4 time penalties to her final score, she won on a final score of 23.2. Claire and Nev have now taken the step up to Novice and completed Dalkeith Horse Trials with the aim to continue the season at this level, and gain qualifications to compete at 1*.

Claire bought Nev as a five-year-old and has produced him with success at BE90 and 100 in 2016 including a win at Aswanley Horse Trials in September last year.

Organiser Douglas Edward, who had a very successful event riding in the Novice sections himself with a win and two runner-up positions, said: “It was a privilege to kick off the 2017 eventing season in Scotland here at Baxterknowe Farm, Forgandenny. With the glorious weather and strong entries there was a real feel-good factor about the whole weekend.”

Two other Aberdeenshire riders won their sections – Iona Campbell and Mhairi Munro. Iona won BE90 Section G onboard Kaledonia Royal, finishing on her dressage of 25.3. A local instructor, Iona also evented the mare in 2016 and is now taking the step up to BE100.

Mhairi added another impressive win to her record with her own Atlantic Affair. The pair won at Forgandenny in June last year too and finished on her dressage score of 26.5 at this event.

Forgandenny also runs a second Horse Trial on July 8-9.
