An Orkney cow has produced a set of quad calves. The 12-year-old Limousin cross cow gave birth to the three bullocks and one heifer on April 20. The quads were fathered by the farm’s Aberdeen-Angus bull. Brian Omand who farms with brother Bruce at Stembister, Toab, says the calves are healthy and their mother is rearing them successfully. The four receive assistance with feeding and are currently being supplemented with one litre of artificial milk each day. Brian was at the birth and knew by their presentation that the cow was having multiple calves but was amazed when the four arrived. “When we first started telling folk, they thought we were talking about a ewe rather than a cow,” he said. The chances of a set of quad calves being born at all are very small, let alone them being born healthy.
