Scots breeders snap up Charolais bull for 12,000gn

Charolais bulls peaked at 12,000gn at the breed’s spring show and sale at Borderway Mart in Carlisle.

Sale leader and reserve supreme champion was 17-month-old Caylers Napoleon, by Rosanna Jupiter.

Put forward by Caylers Charolais in Hertfordshire, he sold jointly to the Irvine family’s Ballindalloch herd near Tomintoul and Jim Muirhead’s Firhills herd based near Arbroath.

Next best at 10,000gn was March 2018-born Balmyle Oleary, by the 11,000gn Balmyle Jasper, from Bill Bruce’s Balmyle herd at Meigle.

He sold to fellow Perthshire breeder Major Walter for his Balthayock herd.

The overall champion sold for 8,000gn to Gelston Castle Farms, Castle Douglas. This was Goldies Noted, by Gretnahouse Heman, from Dumfries breeder Hamish Goldies.

Other leading prices included 7,200gn twice.

First at this price, selling to Messrs Coghill, Birsay, Orkney, was September 2017-born Seaville Nero, by Sportsmans Linesman, from RE and KM Jackson, Wigton, Cumbria.

The other, selling to Messrs Forbes, Ballindalloch, Banff, was November 2017-born Gretnahouse Nelson, by Westcarse Jimmy, from Gretna Green breeder Alasdair Houston.

Thereafter, the Drysdale family, which runs the Glenerich herd at Middle Drimmie, Blairgowrie, achieved 7,000gn for Glenericht Nacho. He sold to Douganhill Farms, Castle Douglas.

Females topped at 4,800gn for an in-calf heifer – Goldies Nancy – from Hamish Goldie, selling to Messrs Strain, Ballantrae.

The Milne family, which runs the Elgin herd at Kennieshillock, Lhanbrydge, Elgin, sold females to a top of 4,000gn for a heifer named Elgin Natty, by Woodpark Elgin. She sold to Messrs Mutch & Son, Forglen, Banff.

Messrs Hourston, Swannay, Orkney, paid 3,500gn for a three-year-old in-calf cow, with her first calf at foot, from the Holstead herd in Yorkshire.

The averages were: bulls, 61, £4,487.60; heifers, 17, £2,272.94; and cows with calves at foot, three, £2,765.
