UK dairy co-operative First Milk says international buyers are flocking up to buy its premium British cheddar.

The Paisley-headquartered dairy business is behind brands like the Lake District Dairy Company, Isle of Arran cheddar, Scottish Pride and Mull of Kintyre cheddar.

Export sales at the farmer-owned business are currently worth around £50million per annum, and work is underway to bag new customers in Europe, the Middle East, Asia and South America.

First Milk said it has recently started exporting its Lake District, Isle of Arran and Mull of Kintrye cheddars to Taiwan.

To accommodate this, the company says it has developed new formats and pack sizes to suit different consumer buying and eating habits in south-east Asia.

“Taiwan has over 23 million people and is one of the four “Tiger” economies,” said First Milk export sales director Fraser Brown.

“It is a well-developed country with a growing taste for Western foods. We have been delighted with the growth in sales of our cheddars in the capital Taipei and now around the country.”

He said the company had also recently hosted a group of Asian supermarket buyers to its Isle of Arran creamery.
