A Fife-bred tup has set a new record price for a traditional type Bluefaced Leicester ram lamb.

Martin Quinn, who runs the Whinnyhall flock near Kinglassie, set the record price of 12,000gn when his ram lamb sold at the Builth Wells National Sheep Association sale in Welshpool, Wales.

By Bonvilston Tudor, and out of a home-bred ewe by Craig Yr Orsedd H10, Whinnyhall N1 sold to north-east breeder Mike Anderson for his Hardhaugh flock based near Dufftown, Keith.

Meanwhile, breeding rams and females of various breeds were in huge demand at United Auctions’ Stirling sale on Saturday, with a total of 903 head selling through the ring and averages well up on the year.

The sale was led at £5,000 by a Bluefaced Leicester shearling from Jamie Pirie, Blarnavaid, Drymen. By an L12 Shafthill that had been bought at Carlisle for £9,000, he sold to Hugh Ferguson, Dykeneuk, Sorn.

Dutch Spotted sheep peaked at 1,900gn for Speyside Cathy – a gimmer from Denis Scott’s Ballindalloch-based Speyside flock, which sold to W Linton, Thirstane, Crawfordjohn.

Colin Little, East Bracklinn, Callander, forked out £1,700 for the top-priced Texel, a shearling ram, by Feddal Road Bollinger, from Allan Campbell, Strawfrank, Carnwath.

Beltex topped at 1,600gn for Tiree Earthquake – a shearling ram, by Callacrag Wise Crack, from Alastair MacLean, Heylipol, Tiree. He sold to D Fisher, Groan, Logiealmond.

Robert Bryce, Chalmerston Farm, Stirling, sold the top-priced Suffolk, a ram lamb, for £1,200 to A Ronald, Ballymeanoch.

Not far behind, Lleyns sold to 1,150gn, for a shearling from Hamish Goldie, South Bowerhouses, Mouswald, which sold to the Mairs at Kinnermit, Turriff.
