A Limousin cross heifer took home the top price at Huntly Mart’s young farmers’ overwintered cattle sale at the weekend.

The beast, which was crowned reserve champion in the pre-sale show by judge Iain Mathers, Wardes, Kintore, was put forward by John Connon of BRoadmyre, Clatt.

Bred at Smallburn Farms, Elgin this 580kg heifer sold to the judge for £1,600 or 313.7p a kilo.

Taking the supreme champion title at the show, which was sponsored by animal nutrition company Norvite, was a Limousin cross bullock put forward by 13-year-old Richard Davidson of Corsairtly, Keith.

This lot, which was bred by Coleburn in Elgin, won the young handler the best stockperson award at the show.

It sold for £1,400 or 245.6p a kilo to the judge.

The champion and reserve unhaltered cattle titles were both awarded to John Brown of Hilton of Culsh, New Deere for Limousin cross bullocks.

Both beasts were bred at Weets Farm, Wardhouse, and sold to I Pirie, Overton. The first weighed 560kg and sold for £1,240 or 221.4p a kilo, while the second weighed 600kg and sold for £1,370 or 228.3p a kilo.

Taking home the prize for the beast achieving the highest gross margin was John Connon of Broadmyre, Clatt, who raised his heifer by £2.75 a day.

While, the highest daily weight gain prize went to Drew Gibson, Gardenstown, who achieved a weight gain of 1.46kg a day.
