Fancy joining the Press and Journal on its inaugural cruise next summer? Today marks one year until the cruise sets sail on June 14, 2020. Step aboard and see what we have to offer…

If you’ve ever thought of booking a cruise for your summer holiday but haven’t found any with the itinerary you want or leaving from a convenient location, then take a look at what the Press and Journal is offering readers next summer.

The P&J is setting sail on its first cruise aboard the magnificent Magellan, departing from the port of Dundee. We are excited to offer our special Press and Journal departure, The Best of Norway & Scottish Isles, from June 14-23, 2020.

A fantastic Save up to 40% offer is currently available on this special scenic cruise. For full details, please click here.

This new itinerary has been carefully planned in partnership with Cruise and Maritime Voyages and has been developed with readers in mind. Taking inspiration from some of the most popular cruise holidays, this 10-day itinerary showcases some of the most spectacular sights in the Northern Hemisphere.

Itinerary

Departing directly from Dundee and returning to Greenock, this superb voyage will first take you to Norway so you can soak in some of the most stunning scenery to be found anywhere in the world.

You will be dazzled by the awe-inspiring beauty of the Majestic Fjords of Western Norway. Surrounded by soaring mountains and spectacular waterfalls, you will glide along on board Magellan through mirror-calm, deep waters and some of the most scenic landscapes on the planet.

Then there’s the opportunity to take a trip on the unique Flåm Railway, one of the most famous rail journeys in the world.

You’ll then set sail for some of Scotland’s unique and beautiful islands – Orkney and Shetland, world-famous Skye and scenic Mull.

Magellan Ship

But what can you expect on board the majestic Magellan? Well, we’ve been on board for  a special guided tour.

You are immediately struck by how sleek a cruise liner Magellan actually is. She has a passenger capacity of around 1,250 – relatively small in the era of big ocean liners which can carry up to 10,000 passengers.

The advantage of the smaller ship is being able to visit more inaccessible ports – particularly useful for sailing through the fjords of Norway. Some cruise liners when visiting the fjords can only navigate along Norway’s main west coast, but Magellan can visit more intricate areas, maximising the whole cruise experience.

Recently refurbished, Magellan is a thoroughly modern, bright, airy and supremely comfortable “home from home”.

Passenger accommodation is arranged on nine spacious decks served by eight lifts, wide corridors and stairways.

There are more than 600 cabins spread across various deck levels – with a good number of them being specially designed and allocated for solo travellers.

The higher end suites feature comfortable sofas as well as your own private balcony – unsurprisingly these cabins are very popular and can often sell out first. Away from your room, there are several beautifully appointed lounges boasting panoramic picture windows – perfect for taking in the scenery, or enjoying the light on days at sea.

A refreshing drink – weak or strong, hot or cold – is never too far away as Magellan is well served by formal and informal bars and cafes throughout the main deck.

Dining and Entertainment

In terms of dress code, Magellan wants passengers to be relaxed and comfortable so does not enforce any strict dress codes while on board. The only condition is that no shorts or sleeveless T-shirts are allowed in the restaurants. All packages include full board, so meals are paid for as part of your overall price – although some of the speciality dishes in the Kensington Restaurant do get charged at a supplement.

All food served is themed around a “traditional British experience”. The relaxed “home-from-home” and British theme continues if you fancy a pint or a pinot at the Taverner’s Pub – a classically styled bar that feels like it belongs in any UK city. There is also a designated casino area, for those who fancy a flutter.

To make up for any indulgence at the restaurant or bar, Magellan offers a marvellous, beautifully appointed wellness centre, gym, pools and Jacuzzis.

Arguably the most impressive area on board is the Jade Wellness Centre – Magellan’s onboard spa. Once you enter, you’ll feel instantly as if you’ve been transported to a secluded luxury spa resort.

There is a vast choice of treatments available, but book early as these are very popular.
