Author Douglas Lockhart, an expert in local history, has been researching the history of village communities in the North-east of Scotland for 45 years.

A well known speaker at local history events, he’s now put pen to paper with this book which looks at three communities overlooking the Moray Firth which were all founded by landowners in the first decade of the 19th century.

Along with fascinating details of each of the villages, Burghead, Hopeman and Cummingston, the book contains an impressive collection of more than 60 photographs which offer a superb glimpse of bygone days.

The extensive photograph captions make this much more than a collection of old snaps, as through these, he tells the story of these communities.

Also featured are the streets of these communities and social history photographs of specific events such as Baden Powell’s visit in 1915 and Seaforth & Gordon Highlander military camps.

The author recommends visiting the villages and those who do will find the book an excellent starting point for finding more about them – locals may also learn a thing or two about their surroundings.
