Review: Funbox shine at Aberdeen Music Hall

Post Thumbnail

Funbox (formerly The Singing Kettle) were back in Aberdeen at the weekend with a super new show for their north-east fans.

Called Trouble in Toy Town, the production saw Funbox members Kevin, Anya and Gary dressed up as toys trying to save Mayor Bear’s bare bear from Gnorbert the Gnome.

The usual fun and games ensued for both the performers and audience members – who had been encouraged to bring along, or dress up as, their favourite toys. So there were plenty of familiar costumes in the Music Hall audience including Spiderman, Super Mario, Buzz Lightyear and Woody from Toy Story.

The Funbox gang, dressed as a toy soldier, a dolly and a helicopter, took us through an array of songs as well as making us laugh with their usual terrible jokes and visual humour.

Despite the familiar format, they always manage to bring something fresh and new to every show. A highlight for me was when Kevin marched along to the Grand Old Duke of York wearing a clever harness that carried four other “soldiers” making it look like he had a small battalion with him. Another stand-out was when Kevin dressed as a ballerina, which drew shrieks from the audience. “Scottish Ballet’s loss,” was his comment,

The troupe have lost none of their sparkle and continue to entertain young and old with their winning formula.

Long may it continue.
