Sixties sensation Twiggy speaks about her newest collection at M&S

How did the collaboration with M&S come about?

I have always been a seamstress and a knitter – and I have been making my own clothes for more than 40 years, it’s my hobby and passion. The fashion industry has been a big part of my life and I have picked up quite a few styling tips along the way that I have always wanted to share with other women. I have been a part of the M&S family for a number of years now so it was a natural progression. I jumped at the opportunity when it came my way a few years ago and the feedback I have received from customers on the Twiggy collection has been really positive.

What was your goal when designing your line for M&S?

I wanted to design a collection that I would wear myself, but also appeal to women with different styles and body shapes. We’ve reworked a lot of the classic looks, giving them a modern twist. The classic feminine figure hugging dress has been reworked with colour block leather and our knitwear pieces are available in some really striking shades, as well as with embellishment for those looking to stay cosy as well as glamorous. The leather leggings, teamed with a smart blouse and blazer also provides a great look to take you from day to night effortlessly.

How would you describe your style?

My style has changed and grown over the years but I have always worn what I feel great in; if you feel good in an outfit, it gives you huge confidence.

My wardrobe is a real mix of statement separates and classic basics that I have collected over the years. It doesn’t matter if it’s designer, high-street or vintage – as long as I feel comfortable. I love dressing up a pair of jeans and a tailored jacket with some great accessories, whether it be a statement necklace or patent leather heels. M&S always has been, and will continue to remain, a firm favourite of mine when kitting out my wardrobe. We are lucky that our high street shops are great so you don’t have to spend a lot of money to look stylish.

What’s the key to still looking fabulous in your sixties?

A woman shouldn’t be defined by her age, our style should represent who we are, not what other people think we should wear. It’s about attitude and confidence. I still think about what I wear each day and love getting dressed up. For me the key to looking fabulous is to stick to what you know suits you but add glam pieces to give them a little update.

I recently designed a bright pink lace dress for my daughter’s wedding. I wanted something stylish and on trend, but first and foremost comfortable. I got so many compliments I decided to add it to my Spring collection. Comfort is the key to confidence.

What can we expect next from Twiggy?

I’m already experimenting with different styles and patterns for the A/W 14 collection. I can’t wait to see how it comes together and to add some fresh pieces to my wardrobe.
