Is Mexican food truck Aye Aye Amigo a welcome addition to Aberdeen’s beachfront?

Aberdeen’s Beach Boulevard is fast becoming one of the best locations in the city to venture to for a bite to eat.

The eclectic range of street food vendors and eateries that line the beachfront dish out a range of mouth-watering cuisine, which means there’s something for everyone.

You have vegan and vegetarian grub available at Roots On The Beach and Foodstory Beach Hut and to-go pizzas at Project Pizza and Pizza San Rocco.

You also have The Highlander Bus Cafe, The Pier and Barking Mad Coffee and Cakes for a superb selection of breakfast, brunch and lunch dishes.

And last, but certainly not least, there’s Aye Aye Amigo.

Karla and I had been eager to stop by the food truck for months but, due to opening hours that didn’t suit our filming schedule, we weren’t able to until recently.

Owner Russell Ogg conveniently opened his mobile truck’s hatch for the first time one Tuesday lunchtime and we hastily got in the car and headed down.

Aye Aye Amigo: What is it and what’s on offer?

Aye Aye Amigo is a street food van serving up a mix of traditional Mexican dishes.

It is stationed at the Footdee (known locally as Fittie) side of the beach between Roots On The Beach and The Highlander Bus Cafe. It’s also bright yellow so it is hard to miss.

In terms of the menu, Russell has been rustling up tacos, quesadillas and burritos that can come with a variety of toppings including pulled pork, pulled chicken, beef chilli and veggie chilli.

There are also nachos, loaded fries, homemade guacamole and lip-smacking jalapeno poppers to try out – depending on stock availability.

Aye Aye Amigo’s opening hours change weekly, but you can keep up-to-date via the Facebook page.

Barbecue chicken tacos with honey sriracha

There was a lot going on in the barbecue chicken tacos. But did everything marry well together? Absolutely.

The tomatoes were rich and sweet, the jalapenos added a nice subtle kick, and the pulled meat was incredibly juicy. I’d go as far as to say that it was some of the best meat I’ve had in a while.

Karla and I decided to add some tangy honey siracha, which was a superb addition and a must try in my opinion.

The only downside to the dish is that it was a tad on the messy side and there was a lot of liquid dripping off of the taco as we worked our way through it.

Veggie chilli burrito with maple habanero

The veggie chilli burrito was packed to the brim with ingredients. It was made up of veggie mince, plenty of kidney beans and lots of veggies.

Just like the contents of the tacos, the filling was succulent and there was plenty of it, too.

We decided to add the maple habanero sauce this time around and it defintiely helped elevated this dish.

Spicy, but predominantly sweet, it lifted the burrito to new heights and complemented the smokiness of the sauce which made up the chilli.

It’s definitely a sound option for those after something meat-free.

Beef chilli quesadilla with sriracha mayonnaise

I didn’t think anything would come close to topping the tacos, however, the beef chilli quesadilla was an absolute pleasure to tuck into.

The wrap itself had been cut in thirds – perfect for sharing – and was grilled to perfection, making it crispy and sturdy enough to hold the heavy filling inside.

One of the standout components was the gooey and creamy cheese. And the guacamole was a triumph – Karla is eager to find out the recipe pronto.

Karla and I both agreed that the barbecue chicken would have been a better choice of filling for the quesadilla, rather than the beef as it seemed just a but too hefty for the thin wrap.

The cheese inside had also melted perfectly which meant that much desired cheese pull was achieved.
