Cosy family home in Dyce

Martin and Suzie McGillivray
Martin and Suzie McGillivray

Fancy a stress-free move? Well with this lovely family home in Dyce all you have to do is move your furniture in. Cheryl Livingstone finds out more

Having lived in Dyce for most of his life, 42-year-old Martin McGillivray said it is with sweet sorrow that he has decided to move onto pastures new.

His house, 1 McIntosh Close in Dyce, is also somewhere he is not going to find easy to say goodbye to. He bought the house with wife Suzie five years ago and will remain as a special place in their memories as the first house they lived together as a married couple.

The house is the third Martin has bought from builders Malcolm Allan over the past 15 years. It is their use of traditional built homes – rather than kit homes – that drew Martin to them.

“I think Malcolm Allan are excellent builders and they produce high quality homes,” he said. “Their builds always have an excellent finish and look great. I’ve never had any issues with them so when we heard they had a new development in the area, we decided to go take a look.”

Initially they had gone for a different house type but when a buyer fell through for Number 1 McIntosh Close, Martin and Suzie went for it.

Martin, who works as an emergency responder for Aberdeen City Council and is a part time firefighter for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service, said: “It’s a beautiful house. It’s a corner plot so it’s got a really large garden. It’s in a stunning location, you can enjoy lovely views towards Newmachar. It has lots of character too and has a nice homey feel to it. It’s
got lots of space. It would be a great home for a family.”

The four bedroom detached house with double garage is in a great condition and definitely falls into the category of “ready to move into”. Martin said it would make an ideal family home and I would completely agree, especially given the amount of space it has.

The space on offer is unbelievable and would suit a family which already has lots of members or ones with plans to multiply in the future. All the rooms are huge and the bedrooms, if not needed as sleeping accommodation, are very flexible and could be used for lots of different purposes.

The house creates a perfect first impression, mostly thanks to its
kerb appeal and the welcoming hallway which leads you to the spacious lounge.

This is a lovely cosy room which is flooded with light thanks to a large bay window and gives you great views of the front garden and beyond. French doors lead into the separate dining room, another great space for entertaining guests or having an intimate meal for two.

Sure to be a popular gathering spot in this house is the modern kitchen which is fitted with an excellent range of units and is set on open plan with the family and dining area. Like the other rooms, the kitchen is huge and budding chefs are sure to be impressed with the amount of work space available.

Also on the ground floor is the first of the double bedrooms which has a built-in wardrobe while an elegant staircase leads you to the split-level landing and to the stunning master bedroom with an en suite shower room and dressing area.

There are a further two excellent sized double bedrooms both of which benefit from built in wardrobes, a study and superb family bathroom.

Martin said one of the couple’s favourite rooms is the lounge, which he said was a “great space for family gatherings” and the master bedroom is also at the top of the list.

He added: “The kitchen is huge, there is plenty of space for a big party and entertaining.”

Outside the house, on the market for offers over £450,000, there is a large driveway which provides excellent off street parking and leads to the double integral garage.

The well maintained gardens to the front and rear are mainly laid to lawn and feature a range of attractive plants and shrubs.

“We’ve got a really big garden, it’s been a great space in the summer and we’ve had lots of barbecues out there,” Martin said.

“As we are the corner plot, its really private, no one looking over you which is great.”

Now Martin and Suzie have decided to try to buy another Malcolm Allan home, this time a little further from the city in Auchleven. So what will they miss most about their first marital home?

“I will miss everything about this home but I love Dyce as well,” he added.

“I think it is just as good as Cults or Kingswells and these other places. It’s going to hard to leave it actually.

“I’ll miss out friends and the lovely community we have here. Our neighbours are really nice and friendly and are always on hand if you need some help.”

Dyce is a popular suburb of Aberdeen linked to the city by both good road and rail public transport facilities, to both the north and south of the city. The area has a wealth of amenities including both primary and secondary schools, an Asda superstore and is extremely convenient for the airport and the industrial estate offices at Dyce and Bridge of Don.
