Could this be the home from Robert Louis Stevenson’s Kidnapped?

Old Glassingall is a former laird’s house painted in traditional white, set in a picturesque countryside location.

Dating from 1745, the house faces south in an idyllic spot on the Glassingall Estate, with the Ochil Hills to the east and the Trossachs to the west.

Steeped in history, with records dating back to the 12th century when the house belonged to the Kynbuck family, there is also a fascinating literary connection, according to local historian, Archie McKerracher, who is convinced the property was the original ‘House of Shaws’ in Robert Louis Stevenson’s Kidnapped and that the plot was based on the family who lived there at the time.

It has a beautiful balance of period elegance and modern family style and features a number of rooms of note including a large dining fitted kitchen ideal for relaxed socializing which has a four oven dark blue Aga; a bright family room with a solid oak floor and warming wood burning stove; a formal dining room painted period-authentic crimson which has north and south facing windows with working shutters; and a fine Georgian drawing room with a marble fireplace, a door leading out to the garden and outstanding views.

A room currently used as a study would make an ideal self contained downstairs bedroom as there is an en suite shower room and direct access to the garden.

Upstairs on the first floor the room accommodation comprises two good sized south facing bedrooms, one en suite, and a family bathroom, along with a single ‘bunk’ room.

On the second floor, a further two double bedrooms and a shower room are found and there is another double bedroom with a quirky port hole window overlooking the courtyard, along with a shower room, both accessed off a separate staircase.

Off the courtyard are two stable houses fitted with the original cast iron and wooden loose boxes which like the house, are B listed.  There is around an acre of garden at Old Glassingall which is bordered by a burn and original stone walling, and which includes rolling lawns, well planted borders and beds, and a kitchen garden.

Savills associate director, Harry Maitlan said: “Old Glassingall is a particularly inviting house, with an immediate appeal and plenty to enjoy both inside and out.  Its listed status and pleasing Georgian design, along with the pretty parkland setting and proximity to the historic town of Dunblane make this an excellent prospect for those seeking a fine family home.”
