When Gillian Esson relaxes in her garden she can gaze out across open countryside, or drink in the beauty of a 19th-century church which stands in the grounds of The Old Rectory in Fisherford.

On Gillian’s own admission she has never taken life at The Old Rectory for granted, and still wanders round the church ruins after moving to Fisherford near Inverurie four and half years ago.

Built in 1851, St Thomas Espial was open for worship until the 1960s, and the rectory was built on the same plot of land.

The Old Rectory, which could yours for offers over £345,000, is now a beautiful four bedroom home which has maintained its period character.

“It’s never become normal to have a church in the garden even after all this time, I love the sense of history which it brings,” said Gillian.

“It’s honestly never felt spooky to live here, although I often think about the people who came to church here.

“It was built because the community didn’t actually have their own church and they were travelling too far for services.

“The church was built at the same time as the rectory and the school, and from all accounts it was well used.

“There’s still the original stained glass windows and when the sunlight hits them, they look stunning.”

The Old Rectory itself has been sympathetically modernised by various owners over the years, and even has an old fashioned bell.

“I think that was inspired by Downton Abbey but it’s certainly in keeping with the house,” said Gillian.

The lounge is clearly the heart of the home, and Gillian’s favourite room.

It has triple aspect windows and a beautiful raised fireplace which features a whisky vat.

It’s the perfect room to curl up in with a book, and Chewee the cat is a definite fan.

The lovely dining kitchen is ideal for entertaining and is incredibly spacious. There is a range cooker and French doors lead out to the garden.

Ample work unit space has enabled Gillian to indulge her love of baking.

Completing the downstairs accommodation is a living room which could be used as a bedroom.

There is also a shower room and utility room.

A curving staircase leads to the mezzanine master bedroom.

This room is incredibly spacious with sloping ceilings and a skylight, and has an en-suite bathroom.

There are three further double bedrooms and a family bathroom which has a separate shower.

There are charming period features throughout the house including window shutters, panelled doors, and double skirting.

“I think because of the history it has never quite felt like I owned The Old Rectory, I’ve simply taken care of it,” said Gillian.

“Each owner over the years has made improvements, and I feel very grateful to have been given the chance to live here.

“Of course it is unusual but it’s also very tranquil, there’s an incredible sense of peace here.”
