Hebridean haven hits the market

The Isles of the Sea
The Isles of the Sea

On the Inner Hebridean island of Luing there’s a rather special property, one which is only yards from the sea and enjoys stunning, far-reaching views across the Sound of Luing to the Garvellachs, the Island of Belnahua and Fladda Lighthouse.

In the distance, across The Firth of Lorn, is the island of Mull, famous for its white-tailed eagles. The Isles of the Sea, a semi-detached house which could do with a little modernising, is also a haven for wildlife as porpoises and dolphins are regularly seen swimming through the Sound, while otters, deer, birds and the famous Luing cattle are regularly seen.

Properties such as this one in the village of Cullipool are rarely available on Luing’s west coast. It’s on the market with a guide price of £215,000.

The house has generous accommodation spread across two floors. The ground floor has an entrance porch, a spacious sitting room and a large dining kitchen. While it has many original features, recent improvements include new windows and an attractive sun room – the ideal spot to enjoy the superb views.

The ground floor bedroom also benefits from a new en suite shower room. Upstairs there’s a large master bedroom, a shower room, cloakroom and a further bedroom/study.

Outside, there are gardens front and rear. Directly across the small road which runs in front of the house and close by the pier, there’s an ideal launch point for a small boat.

Fishing, kayaking, sailing and skiffing – through the island’s club – are popular pastimes and a wide range of other events are organised through the island’s two village halls and heritage centre with its cafe and museum.

Luing has a population of about 185 and is served by a daily car ferry to Seil and the mainland making it one of the most accessible of the Western Isles. The island has good amenities including a shop, post office, primary school and church. The neighbouring island of Seil has a medical practice, shop and nine-hole golf course.

Oban, which lies 17 miles to the north, has a good range of amenities and facilities.
