Michael Fawcett, 23, from Aberdeen, is a field engineer for AISUS Offshore. He has a Bachelors of Science (BSc) in Mechanical Engineering.

What does your job involve?

I design, build and maintain a range of oilfield equipment including remotely-operated cameras and ultrasonic scanning tools for topside, substructure and subsea inspection.

As part of my role at AISUS, I also get the opportunity to go offshore which allows me to gain more hands-on experience, working in the field where these tools are deployed.

This helps me to develop a greater understanding of what the key requirements are for specific projects and complete the job scope effectively.

It also allows me to appreciate exactly how the work done on dry land impacts offshore operations. I am also responsible for writing reports, editing inspection video footage and processing ultrasonic data.

What is your job’s biggest challenge?

Sometimes we are tasked with managing extremely complex work scopes, which require a huge amount of planning to ensure we are equipped for all eventualities. This requires me to remain focused at all times, so I am constantly thinking ahead to make sure the project runs smoothly.

Best thing about your role?

No two days are the same and the work is varied. The company is a finalist in the Elevator Awards, in the business success under three years category, so it really is exciting times for the business.

I am constantly learning and developing new skills and I am always faced with new challenges, which keeps the job interesting and enjoyable.

I am also extremely fortunate to work with such a talented and hardworking team of people who have given me the best support and guidance that I could have hoped for so early in my career.

Best career advice

Do something you enjoy. I believe you should look forward to going to work in the morning and it shouldn’t feel like a chore.

Also, I think it’s important that you make an effort to get on well with the people you work with and think of ways you can contribute to the overall success of the business and not just carry out your assigned tasks.

What’s your dream?

Looking ahead, I hope to further develop and expand my skills and experiences to take on roles which necessitate increased responsibility and accountability. I firmly believe that the practical skills I am learning at the moment will benefit me and help achieve this.
