A young Lochaber musician will make a return visit to a top competition this weekend – but this time as a performer.

Anthony Hook is the reigning Highland Young Musician of the Year.

And he has been invited along to this year’s competition to perform at the final on Sunday evening.

The talented tuba player is a former pupil of Lochaber High School and he was delighted when he received first prize in the contest last year.

But pupils from his alma mater will also be competing at this year’s event in Nairn along with others from Charleston Academy, Dingwall Academy, Glenurquhart High School, Grantown Grammar School, Inverness Royal Academy and Millburn Academy.

All 11 competitors, playing a wide range of instruments, will present music to the judging panel at Sunday afternoon’s preliminary round of the competition. The judges will then invite a number of the musicians to perform their complete 15 minute programme at the evening’s public final which begins at 7pm.

The judges, Dr Eddie Campbell, University of Aberdeen, Matthew Chinn, Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and Ruth Rowlands, Royal Scottish National Orchestra, are all looking forward to hearing the results of entrants’ hard work.

All the entrants for the competition are members of one of the Highland young musicians’ regional music groups, which are run as an extension to the work of the council’s instrumental tuition service.

The final will be held at the Newton Mutha Hotel in Nairn. Entry is by donation at the door.
