Legendary Moray soul group still going strong after 25 years

A legendary Moray music ensemble is preparing to take to the stage once again to celebrate 25 years of performing together.

Sold on Soul has been getting crowds moving to the beat at Elgin Town Hall for annual fundraisers since 1993.

During that time more than £100,000 has been raised for charities, with this year’s chosen cause being Unicef.

Saxophone player Colin Henderson first decided to set up the supergroup of musicians from Moray after watching The Commitments film, which told the story of the formation of a Dublin soul band.

The 69-year-old assembled a cast of 11 performers to rehearse in a Rothes garage before entertaining a packed audience.

Seven of the original members will be back at the venue next month as part of a 13-piece line-up for the dance.

Mr Henderson said: “I never thought we would be going 25 years. I just thought we’d do one and that would be it – but people keep saying ‘another year’ and ‘another year’.

“We look slightly different now. There are some different hair colours in the band and some of us are different sizes from what we used to be.

“It’s great fun though and a bit of nostalgia. There aren’t many places where you will get to see a 13-piece band these days.”

Promoter Bill Hope said: “We really hope followers, old and young, will share the fun of a band celebrating 25 years that has provided so much pleasure to so many.”

The concert is at Elgin Town Hall on Saturday, February 3. Doors open at 7.30pm. Tickets can be bought by phoning Mr Hope on 01343 543092.
