Aberdeen pubs and bars
Aberdeen pubs and bars

There’s a vicious rumour going around that Aberdeen is a dull place where a good night out begins on the train to Glasgow or Edinburgh.

To prove that that’s a load of nonsense we’ve brought together a selection of the best nights out in Aberdeen.

Each week we’ll show you our favourite pubs, cocktail bars, nightclubs, and venues.

This week it’s best pubs:

Cosy and cool sums it up
The Blue Lamp: Cosy and cool sums it up

1.The Blue Lamp

It might not look like much, tucked away in the Gallowgate, but step inside this cosy pub and you’ll find a good range of drinks and a is a top venue for a good night out.

With hilarious comedy nights, jazz that will send you into a trance and some good hearty folk there’s always something on under the glow of the Blue Lamp.

There’s also a free juke box with loads of classic records.

BrewDog: Friendly, strong sense of identity and originality, characterful and locally supplied.

2. BrewDog Aberdeen

The flagship bar of Ellon based craft brew revolutionaries BrewDog.

In 2010 the innovative firm redecorated this dilapidated bar “with a sledgehammer in one hand and a can of spray-paint in the other.”

Its deconstructed interior isn’t just home to some of the most knowledgeable craft beer bar staff in the world, the industrial interior pub is packed full of one hundred or so BrewDog favourites and guest beers from Mikkeller, Stone, Nøgne Ø and Oskar Blues

6 Degrees North: Set in a unit that’s been cursed by closure, but this place is going strong.

3.Six Degrees North

With custom made/designed glasses and a private tasting room, this craft beer bar offers tutored tastings, bar reservation sections for special occasions and periodically showcase’s particular breweries and styles.

Be prepared to leave a shoe behind the counter as a deposit if you want to drink ale like a Viking trough a horn though. Seriously.

4.Under the hammer

Located in a quiet side street near Golden Square just minutes off Union Street, this popular pub is in a basement next to an auction house – hence the name.

Works by local artists displayed on the walls are for sale if they take your fancy.

Convenient for the Music Hall and His Majesty’s Theatre, the large notice-board has posters advertising forthcoming and past events in town.

Guest beers come from a wide variety of Scottish breweries including Fyne Ales, Windswept, Orkney & Burnside plus often Taylor Landlord.

Unobtrusive background music plays, making it the ideal spot for those who want to gather their thoughts, or express them without shouting.

5.Ninety-Nine Bar and Kitchen

Located in the heart of the city centre on Back Wynd.

It’s cool and comfortable and often tough to get a table. Great Dj’s in the evenings and weekends.

If you want to munch one of the delicious looking pretzels on the bar, don’t ask. They are a garnish for cocktails…

The Tippling House: Also very trendy.

6.The Tippling House

Located on Belmont Street down a flight of stairs, The Tippling House is a subterranean late-night tavern serving boutique spirits, hand-crafted cocktails, fine Scottish ales and serving excellent food.

Another one that it’s tough to get a table in but definitely worth a visit.

7.The Howff

Another place that doesn’t look special from the outside but step in and The Howff offers welcoming friendly staff a great range of beers, wines and spirits and a space to forget the hustle and bustle of the Granite City, right in it’s heart.

8. The Queen Vic.

The Queen Vic, in Rosemount, is a great place to watch football and an even better place to meet for a tactical planning session before heading into the social warfare of the City Centre.

It’s got a traditional sort of village pub atmosphere and is everything you’d expect your local to be.

The Queen Vic even has its own ale called Rabbies. It’s also renowned for the Monday night pub quiz.

9. Cafe Drummonds

Cafe Drummond is the bastion of the Aberdeen alternative music scene.

It’s also one of the most laid back bars in the Western World by day.

Their fantastic range of over one hundred world rums as well as one of the most extensive whisky ranges in the city will delight even the most well versed connoisseur.
