Cute and homeless: Here are 9 of the SSPCA’s most adorable pets looking for a family

Martin the terrapin
Martin the terrapin

Every week we are going to take the chance to meet some of the cutest and most loving animals on the hunt for new homes in Scotland.

The Scottish SPCA cares for hundreds of animals across the country, including at their Aberdeenshire centre, in Banchory.

We’ve teamed up with the SPCA and here are some of the most adorable animals looking to be re-homed.

If you are interested in rehoming any of the pets below, call the Scottish SPCA on 03000 999 999 or visit the Aberdeenshire centre, located in Drumoak, Banchory AB31 5AJ.

Name: Stitch

Stitch the Staffordshire Bull Terrier
Stitch the Staffordshire Bull Terrier

Age: 4 months

Gender: Male

Breed: Staffordshire Bull Terrier

Stitch is a lovely young Staffordshire Bull Terrier pup who is currently looking for his forever home. Unfortunately, Stitch has been through quite a lot over the last few weeks and has come into our care through no fault of his own.

Despite all he has been through, he is still a bouncy young pup who enjoys making friends and loves to play at every opportunity he gets!

Stitch is looking for a new family who can invest time into training him so that he develops into the charming, bold young man that we know he can be.

We are confident that Stitch could live happily alongside another dog, however, this would be subject to a series of successful introductions under a controlled environment here at the centre.

Anyone considering rehoming Stitch will be subject to a home check.

Name: Buster

Buster
Buster the Border Collie

Age: 5 years

Gender: Male

Breed: Border Collie

Buster boy is a gorgeous collie cross lab who came into SPCA care through no fault of his own and is now looking for his forever home. He is a lovable chap who really enjoys a good playtime with his favourite toys!

Being part collie, Buster is a big fan of the outdoors. He just loves getting out for a walk and a good sniff about which is a good thing for him as it is currently helping him to shift some extra pounds!

Buster has been with us for a while now and although he has found it a bit difficult to adjust to his current environment, he still has a lot of love to give and is counting down the days until he is once again part of a loving family.

He is looking for a home without children, where he can be the only pet in the house. As well as this, Buster would be better suited to a home where he will not be living with any men as he has shown he does have some trust issues.

Most importantly, what Buster is looking for in his new human companion is someone who really understands him. Someone with extensive rescue collie knowledge and plenty of time on their hands for walks!

Name: Megan

Megan the cat
Megan the cat

Age: 3-5 years

Gender: Female

Breed: Domestic Short Hair

Megan is a sweet girl who arrived in our care through no fault of her own.

She has been with us for some time as she has had problems with her skin. Her skin was raw and covered in scabs due to a flea allergy and she had also been over-grooming.

To look at her now you wouldn’t believe it as her coat is beautiful and soft and her skin has vastly improved.

We think Megan would make the perfect pet for a quiet household. She’s a quiet little soul herself and enjoys nothing more than curling up on your lap for a snooze.

Outdoor access would be necessary for her, but a secure garden would probably be best as she can be very easily spooked.

Megan is still undergoing a few simple veterinary procedures before being able to leave the centre however she can be reserved subject to veterinary clearance.

Name: Roald

Roald the rabbit
Roald the rabbit

Roald the rabbit

Age: 3-4 months

Gender: Male

Breed: Crossbreed

Roald is a young continental giant rabbit who went into SPCA care as his previous owner could no longer look after him.

Roald is still quite new in SPCA care so staff are still getting to know him. He still has a few vet checks to go and stil needs to be neutered, so although he can be viewed, he is not ready to go to a new home just yet.

Roald is a very laid back boy and easy to handle. Ideally we are looking for an outdoor home as although he is quite large now, he is only going to get bigger.

Anyone interested in him will need a very large enclosure and preferably some experience with giant breed rabbits.

Name: Sapphire

Sapphire the horse
Sapphire the horse

Sapphire the horse

Age: 20 years

Gender: Female

Breed: Horse

Saphie is 20 years old, but to her age is only a number and she certainly doesn’t act like a pensioner! She is a sweet mare who loves a pamper but Saphie does not suffer fools lightly and if given the chance, can be a bit of a cheeky madam so confidence is key with her.

She has some conformational issues and is a little stiff in her hocks. We have had her checked by the vet and she is sound and pain free at the moment. She works nicely on the lunge but due to her issues we are looking for a companion only home at present.

She can be a bit strong to lead so needs a confident handler. She is happy to live in or out. Sapphire is now looking for a quiet home where she can live out her golden years.

Name: Guy

Guy
Guy the cornsnake

Age: Unknown

Gender: Not Examined

Breed: Cornsnake

Guy is a colourful adult cornsnake who came into care as his owner could no longer look after him.

He has been a consistently good feeder but is very nervous and will strike so needs someone fairly confident to get him used to being handled.

With regular, experienced handling we’re sure he will quickly settle down and become more placid.

Despite the masculine name we don’t know for sure what gender Guy is.

Name: Gonzo

Gonzo the akita
Gonzo the akita

Gonzo the akita

Age: 9

Gender: Male

Breed: Akita

Gonzo is a real teddy bear of a dog who loves to greet you with a smile and a good old body rub. Sometimes he is Mr Happy Bear and at other times he is a right old Mr Cheeky Bear.

When Gonzo is happy he will do anything you want him to do, but when he is in his cheeky mode, he will decide himself what he wants to do or most likely not want not to do. This is very much an Akita breed trait, as they do tend to have their own distinctive characteristics.

Akitas are highly intelligent dogs who also possess a stubborn wilful streak, and if you don’t win their respect, they will just stick two proverbial fingers up in the air at you and not listen to a word you say.

They can also be very reserved around people they don’t know, though we have to say in Gonzo’s case he is actually an all-round sociable dog.

If people don’t understand the breed, they often complain that Akitas can be mouthy, however, again this is a singular Akita trait and it is a way of them communicating with their loved ones.

For example they may want to take you to their lead if they want to go for a walk.

Sharing his home with his human family is what he is all about, but bring other pets into the equation, and Gonzo will not be best pleased.

Given that an Akita’s facial expression is very hard to read, in so much as it never really changes, young children would find it very hard to understand if he was happy or sad. For this reason, Gonzo would be best suited in a home where all the family members understand him and love for who he is.

Name: George

George the domestic short hair cat
George the domestic short hair cat

Age: 8-10

Gender: Male

Breed: Domestic short hair

George is a handsome older gentleman who is looking for his forever home. He is an affectionate but timid boy who loves to spend his days cosied up in his bed.

He would prefer a quieter life where he is the only feline in the household and can get your full attention as and when he wants.

George may take some time before he comes out of his shell but we are confident he will be a wonderful companion once he gets to know you well.

His forever home would ideally be a quiet household with no young children to disturb his beauty sleep!

He may also enjoy the opportunity to explore a secure garden in the summer months once he has settled into his new home.

Name: Martin

Martin the terrapin
Martin the terrapin

Martin the terrapin

Age: Unknown

Gender: Male

Breed: Terrapin

Martin is a nice boy who loves to swim around and bask on a raised platform.

Like all terrapins Martin will require a large enriched habitat to ensure he has a long and happy life as poor husbandry can cause a number of health problems.

An outdoor heated or covered pond such as a poly tunnel or an exceptionally large indoor tank would be suitable.

A balanced diet, controlled water temperature, clean water to swim in, sunlight or artificial UV light, careful handling and regular health check-ups are all required to ensure terrapins remain healthy.
