My Weekend: Simon Puttock

When does your weekend start?
Weekends are slippery things which sometimes seem not to happen at all. But when they do, they start sometime on a Friday afternoon, not too early, and are liable to last well into Monday morning – or slightly into the afternoon.

Perfect night in?
Having friends to dinner with ultra-quiet, invisible kitchen elves in constant attendance to clear up, having done a creditable job of the cooking on my own. I have never had a perfect night in.

Perfect night out?
Getting home afterwards not too drunk.

Ideal weekend partner?
A good friend – at their house, not mine.

Favourite weekend shopping destination?
I am not sure I understand the words shopping and destination when they sit side by side like that. I like shopping,
but . . . hang on, just got it: a rambling car boot sale.

Favourite place to walk?
Beside any water except stagnant pools and gutter puddles.

Weekend you’d love to live again?
50th birthday weekend (spent with good friends at a good friend’s house).

Weekend you’d hate to live again?
I’m old enough for there to be several.

Perfect Sunday breakfast?
Hot, tender, gently steaming croissants lavished with butter and peanut butter and jam, along with strong, milky, chocolatey coffee. And then the rest of the day to recover from breakfast.

Your cure for the Sunday blues?
A quick spot of activity outdoors followed by lounging on the sofa with a book that I feel certain I’m going to enjoy with the prospect of a gripping film or drama on the television late enough to let me finish the book first.

Your dream weekend (if money was no object)?
Melbourne. Nothing more need be said.

The stage adaptation to Simon’s book A Ladder to the Stars runs at The Lemon Tree in Aberdeen until Thursday, December 24.
