Temperatures could hit Scottish-high as heatwave continues

Forecasters say temperatures could break the Scottish record today.

Aviemore wash been the hottest place in the country yesterday, with the mercury hitting 30.9C.

The highest June on record in Scotland is 32.2C – set way back in 1893.

And the highest temperature ever recorded in Scotland is 32.9C in August 2003.

With more sunshine expected today, the Met Office last night said one – or both – could easily be broken today.

Forecaster Simon Partridge said: “The temperatures are likely to be a touch warmer so there’s more chance of breaking that record then.

“We’ll see quite a few 30Cs across Scotland, 31C in some places and there’s a 20-30% chance of 31C so we’re in the realms of beating the record.”

The north enjoyed some of yesterday’s highest temperatures, with Drumnadrochit hitting 29.6C and Oban basking in 27C sun.

Aboyne reached 29.2C and Braemar also reached 27.5C while Kinloss was around 24.9C.

Sunbathers were out in force, with the beach at Loch Morlich packed with picnic blankets, beach towels and parasols.

And to cool down at the Lecht Ski Centre, staff made the most of their snow-making machine. The centre is hosting a snowboard competition this week, so the team were hard at work preparing – giving them the perfect cold spot to take their break in.

Mr Partridge said there was a definite “east west divide” with Aberdeen sitting around 21C-23C throughout the day.

He added: “The east coast temperatures were in the low 20s while the west coast has been up at 30C.

“Today is likely to be the peak of the heat and after that it will cool down slightly, with temperatures around the mid-20s as we head into the weekend.

“There will still be plenty of sunshine and a little bit of cloud, although perhaps a little bit of rain on Sunday particularly for the north-east. Even that shall be fairly shortlived as we go into the next week though.”
