Every household to be sent pro-UK booklet

Alistair Carmichael said people need 'authoritative information that they can trust' in the independence debate

A glossy booklet setting out the positive case for Scotland remaining part of the UK is being sent to 2.5million homes across the country later this month.

Scottish Secretary Alistair Carmichael said it contained factual information to help people make a informed decision in the independence referendum on September 18.

The 16-page “user friendly” booklet, which the Liberal Democrat MP said cost the public purse a total of £720,000, focuses on subjects like pensions, currency, tax, mortgages, shared public institutions and energy.

Mr Carmichael, who represents Orkney and Shetland, said the pamphlet acted as a “signpost” to the UK Government’s 14 Scotland analysis papers which run to more than 1,000 pages of material on all aspects of policy.

He added that the project had been planned for months, was part of the UK Government’s campaign strategy and was not a response to narrowing opinion polls.

The booklet – which cost 30p to produce and is also online – features photographs of adults and children in a number of work and outdoor settings in Scotland.

Mr Carmichael said: “The booklet contains clear, factual information covering areas such as currency, energy, trade, pensions and mortgages.

“It also highlights the benefits of the UK’s influence in the world and the many shared UK institutions such as the BBC, DVLA and Lottery that benefit people in every part of the UK.

“The UK Government has produced plenty of detailed analysis and evidence over the past year or so explaining why Scotland benefits from remaining part of a strong United Kingdom.

“We want to give everyone in Scotland every opportunity to make an informed decision in September.”

Mr Carmichael said he hoped people will take the time to read the booklet which is expected to be delivered to homes from June 23.

“This is a once in a lifetime, irreversible decision so people need to be sure about the choice they make in September,” he added.

“This booklet presents the facts and will help make the arguments clearer.”
