100mph winds cause chaos for travellers in Highlands

Gales reaching more than 100mph battered the north and north-east at the weekend, causing misery for hundreds of travellers.

Waves of more than 45ft were recorded off the Western Isles, forcing the cancellation of dozens of ferry services.

Ferry operator Caledonian MacBrayne said the forecast was severe and advised all ferry travellers to take this into account when planning journeys in the next few days.

Around 2,000 people were left without power after winds brought down trees and power lines.

And there are more high winds to come this week, as the Met Office issued another yellow warning on Thursday across the Highland and islands and Moray.

Forecasters said that the gusts could exceed 80mph and would be accompanied by heavy rain at times.

The A82 Inverness to Fort William road was blocked briefly yesterday afternoon after a tree was blown down near Urquhart Castle.

The west coast experienced the worst of the gales, with a gust of 102mph registered on the Applecross Peninsula.

In Inverness, winds started picking up after 10am, reaching more than 40mph at times.

A tree was toppled close to flats in Culloden, just missing cars parked in the area.

And at Aonach Mor, near Fort William, gusts of 93mph were recorded.

Chief Inspector Graeme Murdoch, senior duty officer for Highland and Islands Division, said: “Our message is to think twice about unnecessary travel while these stormy weather conditions persist. Surface water and the risk of falling trees during the hours of darkness may create additional hazards for drivers.”

On Saturday, there were minor flooding incidents on roads in Lochaber, in particularly the Corpach area, on the Kyle to Plockton road and the A835 Garve to Ullapool road, at Inverlael.

An SSE spokeswoman said that electricity supplies to a handful of communities in the north were disrupted on Saturday, adding that engineers were able to restore power quickly.

High winds in Moray prompted a Highland League football match to be abandoned. The clash between Buckie Thistle and top of the table Brora Rangers at Buckie’s Victoria Park was called off after just 26 minutes.
