Aberdeen forward Niall McGinn has vowed to focus all his efforts on securing second place behind champions Celtic in the Scottish Premiership after St Johnstone ruined dreams of a Dons cup double at Ibrox yesterday.
The Northern Ireland international attacker netted his 13th goal of the campaign in the first half to send Derek McInnes’s Reds ahead in the Scottish Cup semi-final. But Scotland under-21 forward Stevie May responded with two goals after the break.
McGinn will not let the defeat linger as Aberdeen aim to end the season with a Europa League place.
He said: “Everyone was disappointed. We maybe had the better chances but St Johnstone had two good chances and scored from them and that is why they went through to the final.
“We had enough chances to win the game. We were pleased with our performance but we should have been a lot more clinical.
“At least we have something still to play for. We have to turn back to our league form and, hopefully, finish in second.
“At the start of the season, if you had given us a trophy and second in the league we would have taken it. We are disappointed but we have to get back to training and working hard. We have another very important game away to Inverness on Friday night and we are fortunate we still have something to play for.”
McGinn missed a second-half opportunity when he headed wide from close range.
He added: “It was a great ball in from Barry Robson but it just held up a bit. As I was looking at the ball my eye caught a bit of the light but I should have scored.
“We had more chances than that one to win the game. We should have been more clinical but we wish St Johnstone all the best in the final.
“In the League Cup semi-final win against them we took our chances when they came along. They did that this time. They took both of theirs.”
