A charity fundraising motorcycle has been cancelled as a mark of respect following the death of a biker on Lewis at the weekend.

Tributes have been paid to Angus Chisholm, of Carloway, Lewis, who was fatally injured when his motorbike crashed in a dip on the main road on the west side of the island.

No other vehicle was involved in the accident on the A858 Carloway to Barvas road – east of the junction to Brue village.

It is understood the motorcyclist was found by a passing motorist who alerted police shortly before 1.30pm.

Emergency services attended but Mr Chisholm’s did not survive his injuries.

As a mark of respect, Hebriders, the island’s motorcycle club, has cancelled its annual charity fundraising ride which was due to take place this coming Saturday to raise money for Crossroads care charity on the island.

A spokesman for Hebriders Motorcycle Club said: “Our thoughts and prayers are with those who have lost a loved one.”

The fundraiser will be rescheduled for later in the year.

Mr Chisholm was a tradesman in the local building industry as a self-employed slater and roughcaster. He had also worked on oil rigs offshore.

It is understood that Mr Chisholm has two children and is separated from his wife.

Islanders took to social media to pay tribute to Mr Chisholm.

One resident said it was “very sad news for the community. He was a nice guy.”

Another islander said he was “one of the best.”

It is understood Mr Chisholm passed his motorcycle test about two years ago.

He broke a limb after coming off his bike in a previous accident on the Lochs Road in Lewis some months ago.

On Saturday, police traffic collision investigators from Dingwall were called to examine the scene and arrived on Saturday night’s ferry to the island.

The road – the only route between Barvas and Carloway – was closed for several hours with police officers on duty at each end.

Alternative routes required a lengthy detour via the single track Pentland Road, or the longer double track road, between Carloway and Stornoway.

A police spokesman said: “Mr Chisholm, who was from the Carloway area on the island, was riding a motorcycle at the time of the incident.

“The collision occurred shortly before 1.30pm on Saturday on the A858 Stornoway to Barvas Road near to the Brue Junction.

“A report will be sent to the Procurator Fiscal as is usual procedure in fatal road traffic collisions.”
