Moray boost for women’s refuge charity

A charity which offers abused women and children a refuge from domestic violence has been given a cash boost from a festive campaign.

Moray’s MP Angus Robertson and MSP Richard Lochhead collected money for Moray Women’s Aid as part of their annual Christmas card fundraiser.

And yesterday the politicians visited the group’s Marleon House base in Elgin to hand over £1,300.

Charity bosses said the money would help provide practical assistance for some of the region’s neediest families.

The group’s services manager, Elle Johnston, said: “The sum we have received is immense for a small organisation like ours.

“We support about 150 children each year and the money will go towards essentials such as school jumpers and books for them.

“If children are relocating to a different school because of abuse in the home, then having a jumper to help fit in can make a real difference.

“And often at this time of year we receive calls from women who have run out of money and have no electricity, so the funds can help with that too.”

Moray’s parliamentarians raised the cash through a sponsored Christmas card competition, which was open to all primary school children in the area.

The winning card was designed by 11-year-old Greenwards pupil Alanna Pick.

The politicians began the charity campaign more than a decade ago, and this year’s appeal raised more than any previous effort.

Mr Robertson said: “This year we are able to make the largest donation yet, and I am delighted that Moray Women’s Aid are receiving the benefit.

“The support provided by organisations like Moray Women’s Aid is of critical importance.”

Mr Lochhead praised the local businesses who sponsored the initiative.

He added: “The generosity of the Christmas Card sponsors has been fantastic, and as a result we have been able to donate a significant sum to a very worthy local charity.”
