Second crash in less than 24 hours at north-east accident blackspot

Two people were taken to hospital following the crash on the A96 at Bainshole.
Two people were taken to hospital following the crash on the A96 at Bainshole.

Two people were taken to hospital yesterday morning following another crash at a notorious north-east blackspot.

Emergency services were called to the three-vehicle collision on the A96 Aberdeen to Inverness road at Bainshole, near Huntly, at about 7.40am.

Two fire engines were sent to the scene, and used cutting gear to free one woman from her vehicle.

No one involved sustained any life threatening injuries.

The accident happened less than 24 hours after two people were taken to hospital with minor injuries when a Volkswagen van left the bend and overturned in a field.

The incident happened around 4.20pm on Sunday.

It was the 23rd accident at the notorious spot in just over a year – and a resident living nearby said she was “living on her nerves” waiting for more to happen.

Patricia Rettie, 74, and her son Peter, who lives next door, said they fear someone will die at the bend.

Mr Rettie, 44, rushed out of his home yesterday morning after hearing the crash outside.

“Suddenly there was a great big crash and a bang. I jumped out of my bed and went outside and there were two vehicles outside of the house,” he said.

“One of them was pretty bad.”

Mr Rettie is calling for the A96 to be rerouted to remove the bend, or the camber of the road changed to stop more accidents.

“That’s two in two days,” he said.

“Something has got to be done because I’m going to run out there and find there’s nobody alive. I just don’t want that.”

A spokesman for road maintenance organisation Bear Scotland said they were aware of the problems.

“We are aware of reports of recent incidents at this location,” he said.

“Slippery road signs have been placed at the site and we have arranged for the road to be re-textured this month.”
