Police crack down on speeding drivers in Aberdeen

Hundreds of people have been bitten by police dogs.
Hundreds of people have been bitten by police dogs.

A significant number of motorists have been charged by police following a road safety crackdown in Aberdeen.

The operation was carried out on Monday in Kincardine and Mearns with officers warning motorists driving or parking inappropriately outside schools in areas including Portlethen, Stonehaven, Laurencekirk, Inverbervie and Fettercairn.

Patrols were also carried out on the A90, A92, B979 Netherly Road and South Deeside Road as well as unclassified roads in the area.

A number of speeding drivers were caught by police, including a 36-year-old man who was charged for driving at 104mph on the A90 near Stonehaven.

Several other drivers were found travelling above 90mph on the same road near the coastal town.

A 33-year-old woman was also caught driving at 44mph in a 30mph area in Blairs.

Several motorists were also charged or warned for parking in restricted areas, having defective tyres and not wearing seatbelts.

Police also clamped down on drink driving and dangerous driving with a number of people charged for such offences.

PC Austin Stevenson said: “The operation was carried out in response to concerns raised by the public.

“In the Kincardine and Mearns area, we have seen a significant increase in road users due to the construction of the Aberdeen Western Peripheral Route.

“We also anticipate that, with warmer weather, we will see more road users such as motorcyclists and cyclists who want to enjoy the lovely scenery we have in our area and who are more vulnerable to the risks on roads.

“The issues that come with such large numbers of people and variety of vehicles using the roads are wide and varied, and include parking, speeding and other road safety concerns.

“It has been disappointing to see people charged and reported for speeding despite the repeated warnings and the obvious dangers of driving above the speed limit.

“It is unacceptable that these drivers are further examples of those who are willing to put themselves, and others, in obvious danger.

“I would again urge motorists to please slow down, pay attention to what’s around you and, drive for the conditions and respect other road user’s safety.”
