Man tells of moment body landed in front of him in Aberdeen street

Police are investigating the death of a man who died after falling from the roof of a building.

The man, who was named locally as Joe, was rushed to hospital after the accident happened on Jute Street in Aberdeen on Wednesday afternoon.

But he died shortly after arriving at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary.

The tragic roofer was believed to have tumbled over a hand rail on scaffolding set up on the front of a block of council-owned flats shortly after 1pm.

Police officers were carrying out investigations at the scene of the city centre tragedy yesterday in a bid to establish the cause of the accident.

A police van was parked next to the scaffolding and a small area of the garden on the front of the two-storey property was sealed off with tape.

Stephen Stanson, who lives in a flat on Jute Street, said he saw the man, who was believed to be in his 50s, fall over a hand rail on the scaffolding.

The 34-year-old said he was walking along the pavement when he landed on the ground in front of him.

He said: “He fell from the scaffolding right at the top. I think he must have been doing something on the roof.”

Mr Stanson said there were four other workers standing at the bottom of the scaffolding who battled to help their seriously injured colleague until paramedics arrived.

He said: “It all happened very quickly. When it happened, we all froze and just stood there.

“We were trying to come to terms with what had happened.

“We tried our best to stop the bleeding but it was hard.”

The local resident said police and paramedics arrived quickly at the scene and administered CPR to the patient before he was taken to hospital with serious head injuries.

Mr Stanson added: “They obviously tried their best to bring him back.

“I’ve been worried sick about him, I’ve not slept all night.

“When I spoke to the officers outside they confirmed he had died in hospital. I just can’t get my head around the fact that he’s gone.

“I feel sorry for his family – I was hoping that he was going to pull through.”

A spokeswoman from Aberdeen City Council said scaffolding had been erected on local authority land but the work was being carried out on the neighbouring property.

Police confirmed the death was being investigated yesterday (THURS).

A police spokesman said: “Police Scotland can confirm that officers were called to attend a report of an injured man on Jute Street in Aberdeen following a work related incident on Wednesday September 21, 2016 at approximately 1.10pm.

“The man was taken to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary but sadly died shortly after arrival.

“Enquiries are at an early stage and a joint investigation with the Health and Safety Executive is ongoing.”
