Fireworks display for school’s 60th anniversary

The grand finale of Northfield Academy’s 60th anniversary celebrations will be marked by a community fireworks display at the school on Tuesday.

The spectacle marks the end of a year of celebratory events at the Aberdeen school including an open morning for former pupils and a drone photograph of over 600 pupils and 80 staff arranged in the shape of the number 60.

Education convener Angela Taylor said: “(Head teacher) Neil Hendry, his pupils and staff have once again come up with a fantastic event to mark 60 years of Northfield Academy and what a spectacular way to end a year of celebrations.

“The academy has had a special place in secondary education for sixty years and it’s great that pupils and staff, old and new, have been able to take part in the year of events and share their fond memories”.

Mr Hendry added: “The school is very proud of its community, so we wanted to give something back, and I hope that the Christmas firework display will live long in the memory.

“I would like invite members of our community, former pupils, former staff and friends of Northfield Academy to come along and celebrate in style.”

The fireworks will not come from the leftover pyrotechnics from the council’s aborted November 5 display.

A spokesman confirmed: “Northfield Academy’s firework display…was planned long before the cancellation of the fireworks on November 5 which was unforeseen due to bad weather.

“The November 5 display no longer exists as it had to be dismantled in line with safe working practices and legislation which precluded the fireworks being re-used.”
