It has been a popular destination for north-east school trips for decades.

And now, future generations of children will be able to enjoy the education room in Duthie Park’s winter gardens, following a £65,000 refurbishment.

The work, which includes new glazing and flooring, was carried out to ensure the building is wind and water-tight.

The room is used by the park’s ranger service to host workshops for school groups and also hosts the Friends of Duthie Park meetings.

Alan Amoore, chairman of the friends group, outlined the scale of the refurbishment by saying: “The new flooring, glazing and blinds in the room make such a difference and it is fantastic to have a facility that is now fit for purpose within the gardens.

“There are still some finishing touches to be applied, in terms of installing additional fittings, and the friends will be contributing towards their completion.”

The education room was originally part of the Glasgow Garden Festival in September, 1988 and was moved to the park afterwards where it was used as the reptile house the following decade.

Councillor Angela Taylor, the city’s education convener, added: “The winter gardens is a fantastic year-round place to visit, along with other facilities at the park including the play parks, water features, and the Japanese Garden.

“It is already an exciting place to go with lots to do for all the family and I am sure the refurbished education room will make it even more attractive.”

The news comes just weeks after it was announced the park’s popular cafe would reopen in the spring following a major renovation.
